I made a cloak for Hyla today! I completely “winged” it, and it turned out okay. In related news, Hyla just learned how to sew on the machine!

Apple blossom time
Someone in the history of this 200+ year-old house planted some apple trees. We’re grateful.
The trees are scattered around the property, old, misshapen, and a bit eccentric looking, but they bloom every year and they produce wonderful apples, particularly the Golden Russet trees, whose apples are so perfect for pies, you feel you can’t make a pie with anything else.

Peter Reinhart, author of The Bread Baker’s Apprentice, has found out about our little project!
steam heat
M heated my tea water this morning in my new JetBoil camp stove – a Mother’s Day gift from H. Boy is it fast, and quiet. I love it.
Avulsion
We learned a new phrase yesterday: avulsion fracture. That’s what Hyla’s got, at the bottom of her otherwise perfect right fibula.
fence
The fence guy just visited. Looks like what we want to do re: goat fence is doable — and affordable. 🙂
desk
My mother’s roll top desk is now on its way from Florida to here.
I could take a bath in this stuff
The other day I saw a link to a rhubarb sorbet recipe and I thought, “I have to try this!”.
We have three rhubarb plants (thanks to friends who hate the stuff and wanted it OUT of their gardens) and they’re growing well, but not quite ready to harvest yet. Luckily, the Co-op has it in stock.
The recipe is blindingly simple, and the results so gloriously delicious, I plan to stockpile rhubarb in my freezer so I can make it this summer, when the hot weather will cry out for rhubarb sorbet.
